ImagineIT: The End
It is really difficult to imagine that the year is almost over, that the MSUrbanSTEM fellowship is almost complete, that the ImagineIT project is at an end.
My seventh grade students have spent the year thinking about our curriculum from a different perspective; looking at the world around us with a new purpose. We have uncovered the patterns that underlie everything around us. They looked for patterns in clouds and weather, in the solar system and astronomy, in rocks and earth science. They researched patterns, they found images, they created videos and presentations. Above all, they came away with a better appreciation for the interconnectedness of the world.
My greatest challenge with the ImagineIT project was sustaining it during the year. So many things get in the way, feeling pressured to move through the curriculum, assessments, assemblies, field trips, etc. I had to remind myself and my students about the project, to make sure that it was always in the backs of our minds. I had to force myself to allocate enough time to really do the project justice, even if I sacrificed something else.
Overall, I really enjoyed designing the project, I enjoyed being creative and free form with the tasks and assessments. My students also learned other skills in the process, like creating and editing stop-motion videos, and making meaningful presentations. I believe that the ImagineIT project helped them grow in a variety of ways, some of which I was not expecting. I will continue to provide my students with creative projects to ensure that they always enjoy the process of learning.
